Peter Barber, an American bass and second-year master’s student at the University of Southern California, has often been compared to a “young Samuel Ramey” due to his extensive vocal range and stylistic versatility. Some of his performance highlights include: Bottom in Midsummer Night’s Dream, Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro, Stobrod/Blindman in Cold Mountain, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, Bartolo in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte. On top of attending both the Music Academy of the West and the Mark Oswald Summer Program this past summer, Peter was an essential performer in the Butler Opera Invitational, performing roles in a scenes program that include, but are not limited to: Rocco in Fidelio, Selim in Il Turco in Italia, Alidoro in La Cenerentola, and Masetto in Don Giovanni. Next summer, Peter will be an Apprentice Singer with The Santa Fe Opera, where he will be covering Sarastro in The Magic Flute, and The Hunter in Rusalka.
Peter has competed in numerous vocal competitions as a semi-finalist, including: The Loren L. Zachary National Vocal Competition, the Washington International Competition, the Butler Opera Invitational, and the Lois Alba Aria Competition. Peter was also the winner of the USC Concerto Chamber Orchestra Aria Competition in 2018. Peter is currently in the voice studio of Rod Gilfry, and hopes to pursue a career in operatic performance after graduating from USC in 2020.
