Mexican- American baritone Armando Contreras is, "a baritone with gravitas and quickly making his mark in the opera world" praised by Schmopera. This past season, Armando was the baritone soloist in the Kansas City Ballet/Symphony production of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. He was also a Glimmerglass Festival Young Artist where he was scheduled to sing Guglielmo in their english adaptation of Così fan tutte. In the 2020/21 season, Armando sings the leading role of Roberto Gonzales in the workshop of The Knock with the Glimmerglass Festival. Other highlights for his upcoming season include his Boulder Opera house debut singing the roles of Marcello in La boheme and The Count in Le nozze di Figaro.
Armando's 2019-20 season featured a recital with Central City Opera highlighting Latin composers with pianist, Steven Aguiló-Arbues. He also performed a recital with Loveland Opera Theater, and was a featured soloist with Opera Steamboat. On the stage, Armando performed the role of Ben in Menotti's The Telephone with Opera Fort Collins and Esteban in Central City's production of En Mis Palabras. In the 2018/2019 season, Armando sang scenes from The Crucible (John Proctor), L'elisir d'amore (Belcore), and Madama butterfly (Sharpless) with Des Moines Metro Opera. He also performed the role of The Imperial Commissioner in Madama
butterfly with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City.
Other highlights of Armando's recent engagements include Fiorello in Il barbiere di Siviglia (Lyric Opera of Kansas City), The Herald in Rigoletto (Lyric Opera of Kansas City), Dancairo in Carmen (Central City Opera), and the US premiere of Filippo in La gazzetta (Pacific Opera Project).
Armando has received degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music and the University of Missouri-Kansas City studying with the Curtis Institute of Music faculty member, Vinson Cole. During school, Armando performed the roles of Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, John Brooke in Little Women and the title role of Gianni Schicchi. During his studies, Armando also participated in several training programs with The Glimmerglass Festival, Des Moines Metro Opera, the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Central City Opera, and The Aspen Music
This summer, Armando will sing the leading baritone role of Lt. Roberto Gonzales in the world premiere of The Knock with the Glimmerglass Festival. He will also be covering the role of Papageno in their production of The Magic Flute starring Eric Owens as Sarastro.
