Have you ever found yourself lost in the splendor of an aria, wondering about the secret behind the soprano's ethereal voice? From the sparkling coloratura to the velvety lyric soprano, each voice has its own tale to tell.  Soprano Katherine Powers and pianist Victoria Kirsch unfold the mystery behind the soprano voice types through an enlightening blend of performance and discourse, complete with winners and losers as we spin the operatic aria Roulette Wheel. Whether you are a seasoned opera lover, or a curious newcomer, knowledge and melody will intertwine to enlighten us about the blueprints behind some of the most famous roles in opera.

This recital is produced in special partnership with The Opera League of Los Angeles and will take place in Rehearsal Room 4 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion. Opera League members and non-members are welcome!

THIS IS MY VOICE

The Music of Joel Balzun

Saturday, November 23rd at 2PM

125 S Ave 57, Los Angeles, CA 90042

Tickets: $25 ($5 for seniors and students with ID)

The music of Joel Balzun (most recently seen onstage in POP's Don Bucefalo) has been described as "haunting and beautiful" and "a musical standout." Together with mezzo-soprano Max Potter, praised as a “virtuoso singing actor,” this recital will offer the POP community the chance to get to know Joel's other musical side as a composer. Featured on this program will be songs commissioned by Lynx Project and a number of other singers, as well as a world premiere commissioned by Max, ranging from Shakespearean Cabaret Songs to music that explores life with autism.

ECHOES OF THE EAST

Saturday, November 30th at 2PM

125 S Ave 57, Los Angeles, CA 90042

Tickets: FREE

Embark on a musical journey where Western Orientalism is showcased alongside the voices of Eastern Asian composers. This recital invites the audience into a unique opportunity to explore the similarities and differences between these two perspectives. Through this reflection, we celebrate the beauty and richness of both, while bringing to light vocal works and languages often overlooked in the traditional canon.

POP’s mission is to make “accessible affordable and entertaining opera“ for all. By co-producing this recital, we’re able to offer it free to the public. You can support this mission by giving a donation.
