A lost masterpiece. Big laughs. Bel canto sparkle.
A long-lost Donizetti comedy returns to the stage for its U.S. premiere.

POP returns to the most Italian venue in town—the Garibaldina Society—for another U.S. premiere of a sparkling bel canto comedy. Written by one of opera’s most beloved composers, Gaetano Donizetti (The Elixir of Love, Don Pasquale, Lucia di Lammermoor), Il fortunato inganno (“The Happy Deception”) premiered in Naples in 1822 and then vanished for more than 170 years, not resurfacing until 1995 in Vadstena, Sweden. Determined to bring this comic gem to life, Artistic Director Josh Shaw embarked on a wild goose chase—including a trip to Italy—to track down the long-lost score.

Like POP’s hit 2024 production of Don Bucefalo, the story centers on the outsized personalities, eccentricities, and backstage antics of a small opera company preparing a new production. All the beloved comic tropes are here: young love thwarted by a fuddy-duddy guardian, prima donnas vying for attention, composers and librettists at odds, tenors… being tenors, and of course a clever disguise that sets everything hilariously right. For the full Italian experience, every table seat ticket includes an authentic pasta dinner and a glass of wine! Expect big laughs, playful staging, slapstick, and glorious singing.

Sondheim’s razor-sharp masterpiece.
Just in time for Halloween.

It’s been 14 years since Pacific Opera Project first presented Stephen Sondheim’s legendary masterpiece, and this Halloween, Sweeney Todd returns. Experience one of the greatest musicals ever written up close in the intimate El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood, the perfect setting for this darkly comic tale of love, revenge, and meat pies.

Widely considered one of the most brilliant scores in musical theatre history, Sondheim’s thrilling masterpiece blends razor-sharp wit, haunting melodies, and jet-black comedy into an unforgettable night at the theatre. POP’s signature production promises powerhouse singing, bold staging, and plenty of gruesome surprises. Attend the tale this Halloween… but don’t wait, this one is sure to sell out.

Puccini. Paris. Passion.
The ultimate date night at the opera arrives just in time for Valentine’s Day.

POP gives a nod to our mascot, Signor Giacomo Puccini, with a lavish production of La Rondine (“The Swallow”) at Thorne Hall, Occidental College, just in time for Valentine’s Day 2027. Did you know Puccini wrote a Viennese operetta? Well, that was the plan at least, when he was commissioned to write La Rondine in 1913. After a series of twists and turns (including the outbreak of WWI), what ultimately flowed from the great maestro’s hand was an Italianate score filled with soaring melodies, a glorious act 2 finale, and one of the most famous soprano arias ever written, “Ch’il bel sogno.”

Set amidst the sleek elegance of Art Deco Paris, La Rondine is the story of a beautiful young courtesan who dares to dream of true love with a handsome young man from the country. Think La Traviata, without the coughing.

World-famous Mariachi Los Camperos electrify the stage.
A genre-defying story of family, memory, and home.

Opera meets mariachi in Cruzar la cara de la luna (“To Cross the Face of the Moon”), a groundbreaking work that blends soaring classical voices with the vibrant sound of traditional Mexican mariachi. Presented at the historic San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, this emotionally powerful production tells a deeply human story of immigration, family, sacrifice, and love across generations. Grammy Award–winning Mariachi Los Camperos, one of the world’s most celebrated mariachi groups, delivers an electrifying performance that brings authenticity, warmth, and cultural resonance to the stage. The sound of Mariachi Los Camperos intertwines seamlessly with operatic storytelling, creating an experience that feels both timeless and contemporary.

Sung in Spanish and English, Cruzar la cara de la luna follows a Mexican family separated by borders but bound by memory and music. As past and present collide, the opera explores what is gained, what is lost, and what is carried forward when generations cross cultures in search of a better life. It’s opera for seasoned fans, first-timers, mariachi lovers, and anyone drawn to powerful storytelling told through music.
