Spencer Hamlin

Spencer Hamlin has been praised by Opera News for his“scintillatingly smooth” and “dazzling Italianate voice.” In the2024 season he appeared with Salt Marsh Opera for multipleroles in The Child and the Spells, York Symphony forMendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2, Lobgesang, returned toSanta Fe Opera to sing the role of the Innkeeper and coveredValzacchi in Der Rosenkavalier and sang Spoletta in Tosca atthe Metropolitan Opera. He was tenor soloist in WaterburyChorale’s Beethoven Mass in C and Choral Fantasy andCarmina Burana with the University of Connecticut.


In 2025, Spencer returns to the Metropolitan Opera as Spolettain Tosca and covers the First Jew in Salome. He joins TeatroGrattacielo as Pablo in the world premiere of Tin Angel bycomposer Daniel Asia and librettist Paul Pines, then makes a role debut with West Edge Operaas the Captain in Wozzeck. He makes role and company debuts with Detroit Opera as Nick inLa fanciulla del West and Lyric Opera of Kansas City as Goro in Madama Butterfly. He wasalso tenor soloist in Verdi’s Defiant Requiem with the York Symphony. In 2026, Spencerreturns to Santa Fe Opera as Monostatos in Die Zauberflöte and in 2027 as Pong in Turandotand Courtier 1 in the premiere of Brett Dean’s Of One Blood.


In 2023, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut singing the Marschallin’s Major-Domo in DerRosenkavalier. That same season Spencer debuted at the Santa Fe Opera as Spoletta inTosca and sang Poulenc’s Messa di Gloria with the York Symphony and Three Tenors! TheNext Generation with the Vallejo Festival Orchestra.


The 2022 season saw Spencer as Mr. Angel in The Impresario with Syracuse Opera, Almavivain Il barbiere di Siviglia, and Alfredo Germont in La traviata with Opera Theater ofConnecticut. He debuted several roles in the New York City Opera premiere of Ricky IanGordon’s The Garden of the Finzi-Continis, performed Il Cantatore in verismo masterpieceGiulietta et Romeo with Teatro Grattacielo, returned to Odyssey Opera as Albert inRachmaninoff’s The Miserly Knight, joined Tulsa Opera as Second Nazarene in Salome,debuted with Salt Marsh Opera as Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi and The Defendant in and Trialby Jury, and returned to NYCO for All Is Calm.

In 2021 Spencer sang Monostatos in The Magic Flute and Ruiz in Il Trovatore at theGlimmerglass Festival. He sang Don José in a virtual production of Carmen with BrooklynCollege Conservatory and was a soloist in Playhouse on Park’s filmed production of All isCalm. Notable roles include Tchekalinsky in Pique Dame, Bégearss in The Ghosts of Versailles, Ilprincipe di Persia in Turandot, Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Detective Thibodeau in theNew York premiere of Tobias Picker’s Dolores Claiborne, Alfred in Die Fledermaus, Tonioin La fille du régiment, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, Judge Danforth in The Crucible, Ernestoin Don Pasquale, The Witch in Hansel and Gretel, the title role in Albert Herring, Henrik in ALittle Night Music, and Laurie in Little Women.


Additional concert appearances include Mozart’s Requiem and Bruckner’s Te Deum with theWaterbury Chorale, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria with the York Symphony as well asTheofanidis’ The Urgency of Love with the New Haven Chorale, and Handel’s Messiah withSymphoria.
