Matthew Ian Welch

Matthew has been a part of the POP family for many years. Best known for his maniacal portrayal of the Mikado in the 2013 original production and 2019 revival, Don Procopio will be Matthew’s 6th time taking the POP stage. Past appearances with POP include: Carmen (2014, Morales); Viva la Mamma (2015, the librettist); and as a member of the chorus and pre-show doowap quartet in the 50’s-themed L’Elisir d’Amore (2017). What is less often known outside of the organization is that Matthew has also served as a technical adviser, videographer, and sound engineer for nearly all of POP’s filmed and livestreamed shows since La Gazetta in 2018.

Matthew has sung in televised concerts on PBS and the Korean Broadcast Service (KBS), and in live shows at Disney Hall, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and Zipper Hall. In 2017, Matthew toured Japan as a soloist with The Roger Wagner Chorale. He has been the baritone section leader and soloist at Oneonta Congregational Church since 2015.

Beyond his work as a singer, Matthew is a commercial actor and voice over artist, with credits including Dodge, General Motors, and Porsche. In 2016, he was nominated for “Best Supporting Actor” in Los Angeles’ 48-Hour Film Festival in the award-winning short film, Last Words. He has also received multiple awards for his work in regional musicals, including A Noise Within’s 2015 production of The Threepenny Opera, and in the 2016 production of I Love You Because at the Grove Theater Center. Matthew is currently narrating the audiobook trilogy, Keys of Life, while running a studio offering portrait and event photography, audio recording and mixing, and videography services. Matthew is a member of SAG-AFTRA and an Equity Membership Candidate (EMC).
